JARDINES from around the world descended on Applegarth Church on Sunday to celebrate its transition to new owners. The clan, through the Friends of Applegarth Church SCIO, took possession of the building’s keys in a ceremonial handover. Bagpipes heralded the historic occasion, which marks a new lease of life for the former Church of Scotland. The charity say they are dedicated not only to preserving its historical significance but also creating a community hub. And founder Andrew Michell shared ambitious plans for the church’s future, including the development of the ruined stables into a fully serviced community hall and function suite. These initiatives will lay the groundwork for extensive fundraising efforts at local, national, and international level.
Also in attendance were 80 local families, many with deep-rooted ties to the church. They watched on as Reverend David Whiteman presented the keys to Andrena Duffin, the retired secretary of the Clan Jardine Society.
The ceremony included a blessing, emphasising the church’s sacred history, during which Rev Whiteman referred to Applegarth as a “Holy place,” noting its history as both a church and a monastery dating back to 600 AD. He shared concerns about the fate of other churches that have been repurposed for secular uses, expressing joy that Applegarth would maintain its religious and community role.
Clan chief Sir William Jardine of Applegirth reiterated the church’s importance to the Jardine family, highlighting generations of their connection to Applegarth since the 12th century. Meanwhile, American visitor Kyle Jardine, a major sponsor of the charity, expressed his enthusiasm for his family’s involvement and noted that the story of the church’s preservation is gaining traction in the USA.
A Friends spokesperson described the day as ‘heart-warming’, adding: “The ceremony marked a significant moment in the ongoing effort to preserve Applegarth Church’s heritage while reinforcing its role as a vital community hub. “The event not only celebrated the past but also looked forward to a hopeful future filled with potential for community engagement and support.”
